about

While spending a season assigned to write a new song focused on a particular Biblical story, we got to Judges 5 - and the victory song of Deborah & Barak became this tune. Deborah, a prophet, was leading Israel as a judge during a time of conflict. The leader of the army would not go to battle without her, and through some grisly details the honor of the day went to a woman as Deborah predicted.

Using phrases like “God of Israel” can bring up lots of feelings. While it is taken from the Bible directly (the Old Testament), the leaders of that nation of Israel were singing praise and did not yet have a king like the neighboring politically organized people - Yahweh was their leader. The Church in Palestine today, for instance, would probably change that line as it would have unintended political implications at the moment that wouldn’t be as useful. We normally decide to leave it like Deborah wrote it, sometimes with an explanation that it is not a Zionistic expression nor do we think that the Creator only belongs to one nation - it is telling the story about what God did for Deborah. We sometimes will make new verses for occasions such as Easter and change the line to “I will sing praise to the Lord, risen from the dead” or another variation. The upbeat song is fun to sing and the melody is catchy. We hope you can have some fun and be creative, too.
