Sometimes writing a good hook means boiling down a large concept or even many words into something simple that a group can learn and remember quickly and not get bogged down by reading songsheets or powerpoints.
This one uses one of Christ’s metaphors from Matthew 9.
“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
The “new wine” we are referring to is the transformative presence of the Holy Spirit and the good things that flow out of it (not booze). Most of us actually do not even own wineskins anymore, but the parabolic nature draws our imaginations into wanting more from God. We are singing that we want new wine as new wineskins already, as we’ve received Christ and the fulfillment of the law. Jesus is responding to questions about fasting to the Pharisees - a group of religious reformers of his day, often antagonistic to Jesus in the gospels.
This song takes a journey in the verses, it is often declarative - singing about God. Most of our songs are worship - singing directly to God. The first verse is from the perspective of Jesus, stating crucial elements of his mission. The second verse, because of the new wine, we are joining in with Jesus on his mission. The third verse is us singing it back to Jesus - worshipfully acknowledging where we get our mission. The fourth verse, while having a soloist repeating the hook we come back to our group having a mission again. Sisters & brothers feast and dance - we mix it up. We’re all God’s children.
lyrics
I want that new wine
I have come to heal those who are not well
I have come to call the broken and cast down
O my brothers, come and join the feast!
O my sisters, come and dance with me!
We have come to heal those who are not well
We have come to call the broken and cast down
So my sisters, come and join the feast!
O my brothers, come and dance with me!
You have come to heal those who are not well
You have come to call the broken and cast down
O my brothers, come and join the feast!
O my sisters, come and dance with me!
We have come to heal those who are not well
We have come to call the broken and cast down
So my sisters, come and join the feast!
O my brothers, come and dance with me!
