about

Our journey with Jesus often contains stretches of doubt, alienation, and loneliness. Sometimes it is our actions or lifestyle that makes us feel estranged, other times a natural growing process when our faith moults like the cicada or a new skin emeres like the young snake - leaving behind a skin or shell. This song is a petition to be renewed and for a rich sense of God’s immanence to remain during a difficult season.

We usually play this tune in Bm, but brought it down a ½ step for this recording. On a guitar, we tuned down a ½ step to keep the chord formations mostly basic first position chords (Bm, A, Em, F# for the verse and G, Am, C, Em for the chorus). For worship, everybody sings the whole song together. For the purposes of this recording we varied some of the voicing and wanted to highlight a strong female vocal as the leader for this song.

lyrics

Stay close, don’t feel far.
Help me feel right where you are.
Near to me, all around me
You’re within me, you never leave me.

All my shame, all of my burdens
and self blame, take these away!
I give to you all I have carried
In your hope I am saved

I will grow in your growth
I will long in your longing
I will be where you are with me
In this practice, in this peace

Bbm Ab
Stay close, don’t feel far.
Ebm E E7
Help me feel right where you are.
Bbm Ab
Near to me, all around me
Ebm E E7
You’re within me, you never leave me.

Gb Abm
All my shame, all of my burdens
